Dear Prof Brad,
I am Paul Mak a student from your Technical Communication module. I graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) in 2018 with a diploma in Mechanical Engineering, specialized in Automotive Technology and Motorsports (ATMS).
During my final year in polytechnic, I chose to take on Final Year Project (FYP) instead of internship. My FYP was my specialization in ATMS and what sparked my interest to choose ATMS over internship was my interest in cars since when I was a kid. My dream is to be able to build, tune and modify my own car one day, but of course not in Singapore since there are limitations. Throughout my FYP, I have learned the importance of electronic circuits and programming in the automotive industry. This led me to enroll in Telematics to improve my knowledge in this field so that I can advance into the automotive industry after graduating.
Moving on to communications, I feel uncomfortable giving a speech in front of a large crowd and I have problems giving a concise speech if I do not have a full understanding on what I am presenting. Generally, I can communicate effectively in smaller groups and even with strangers. I believe I can also explain a concept or situation catered to the understanding of different individuals.
In this module, I hope to improve my skills in communication such as being more confident when giving a speech to a larger crowd and being able to think of what to say concisely off the top of my head. I am willing to step out of my comfort zone to improve myself and overcome the challenges.
Thank you and I look forward to your upcoming lessons.
Best Regards,
Paul Mak
Dear Rachel,

Dear Prof Brad,
Thank you for your reply.
Regarding the difficulty to pursue my interest of building, tuning and modifying my own car is because I think it is illegal to do that locally.
I should have elaborated on what I meant by modifying my own car, as my interest is of those people in America or Japan where they could build their car from scratch, swap the engine to make the car more powerful or tuned the car for more power and changing the parts for performance or aesthetics. Therefore, I think that it might not be wise to pursue my interest locally.
As for my Final Year Project (FYP), my class was required to improve two cars from…
Dear Paul,
Thank you for taking some time to write this introductory letter, which has allowed me and your classmates to understand you better. After reading your letter, I would like to share my thoughts.
Based on your letter, I found it notable that you found your interest in engineering through your early interest in cars. You mention a couple things that caught my attention in relation to that. One is that you said it would be hard to pursue your interest locally. Why is that? Another is that you were even able to focus on ATMS for your FYP in poly. It might be interesting for you to explain that further, in a sentence or two.
In terms of…
Dear Paul,
It was a pleasure to get to know you more. Overall well written especially your interest in the ATMS sector.
We are facing similar issues in the aspect of communication so let us work together and better ourselves in this course.
Cheers,
Rachel
Thanks for the letter, Paul. I'd like to see comments from your buddies before I comment.
